Guidance Documents & the IEE (IET) Code of Practice
HSG (107) - Maintaining portable and transportable electrical equipment.

This guidance document gives advice on the maintenance of portable or transportable electrical equipment which may be used connected to the fixed mains supply, or to a locally generated supply and which could result in an electric shock, burn or fire due to damage, wear or misuse.
The guidance covers drills, extension leads, kettles, and other similar equipment used in all types of work environments such as construction sites, factories, workshops, business and commercial premises.
The document is intended to assist employers, employees and the self employed, by describing what action can be taken to maintain the portable electrical equipment under their control, in a safe condition, wherever it is used, and in doing so help them to prevent danger arising.

The IEE Code of Practice for In Service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment (Second Edition 2001)

The Institute of Electrical Engineers (now merged with the IIE to become the Institution of Engineering and Technology) is the main body in the UK responsible for setting the standards to be adhered to for electrical work or testing being carried out on either portable electrical equipment or fixed installations.

The Code of Practice is recognised as the industry standard for PAT testing. It is written for both the people who carry out the inspections and tests and also administrators who have responsibility for electrical maintenance.

EURO PAT adhere to the the standards and guidelines within the Code of Practice.

The Code of Practice was produced following contributions from a range of professional bodies and organisations including The Health & Safety Executive, Dept of Trade & Industry, National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting, Electrical Contractors Association and Federation of Electronic Industries.

Broadly, part 1 of the Code of Practice provides guidance on what work needs to be done i.e. the law, training, procedures and documentation.
Part 2 gives guidance for the people that carry out the practical work and details the inspections and tests including:-

  1. User checks
  2. Formal visual inspections
  3. Combined inspections & tests

The Code of Practice also includes additional information & guidance notes.
