Electrical Testing
Electrical testing is the final part of the
Portable Appliance Test. It will, as a rule, follow a Visual
Inspection of the appliance and is often referred to as a
Combined Inspection & Test.
A Combined inspection & test should be
carried out on a regular basis, for example every 12 months
with Visual Inspections in-between. The Frequency
Table outlines the suggested visual inspections &
testing schedules.
Each appliance is tested in a methodical order
(usually by location i.e. room) and each appliance is assigned
an Asset ID Number that enables easy identification and monitoring
of appliances over time.
As described above, a formal visual
inspection would take place followed by a series of electrical
tests
Dependent on the class
and type of appliance, these include:-
- Earth Continuity/
Bond test – testing the effectiveness of the earth
conductor
- Insulation Resistance
test – testing the effectiveness of the insulation
- Earth leakage
test – alternative to above
- Functional
Test – checks that the appliance works properly
- Polarity Test
– checks whether wiring is intact and connected correctly
Testing Equipment
The electrical tests are
performed using specialist purpose-built testing equipment
which is connected to the portable appliance being tested.
The testing equipment then measures and interprets the detailed
test results providing an overall pass or fail. The results
are then recorded and saved.
EURO PAT use Seaward testing
equipment and software.
