Visual Inspection
Visual Inspections are
a vital part of the overall testing process. If performed
correctly, by persons responsible to do so, then the majority
of faults should be picked up at the Visual Inspection stage.
Whilst Visual Inspections
form an important part of the Combined Inspection & Test,
they are an important part of the process in their own right.
Visual Inspections should
be carried out (independently of the Combined test) on a regular
basis i.e every 6 months - between the annual Combined Inspection
& Test.
See
Frequency Table for suggested visual inspections &
testing schedules.
Each appliance is inspected
in a methodical order (usually by location i.e. room) and
assigned an Asset ID Number that enables easy identification
and monitoring of appliances over time.
It is then visually inspected
and the findings formally recorded and stored along with the
other P.A.T. records.
The appliance is thoroughly
inspected including
- Condition of the Supply
Lead – Are there any loose connections or bare, burnt
or frayed wire?
- Appliance casing –
is the appliance case secure? Is it free from damage or
dirt that may affect safety?
- Plug – is it
free from damage or cracking? Is the plug to BS standards
- are the plug pins insulated? Are there any signs of overheating
on the plug or socket?
- Wiring – is the
plug wired correctly i.e. to the correct terminals and securely
fixed? Are the wires free from becoming trapped? Is the
cable grip secure?
- Fuse rating –
does the appliance have the correct rated fuse for the appliance?
Does the fuse work?
- On / Off switch –
does it operate as it should do?
- Cable size –
Is the cable the right length? Is the cable thickness (core
area) suitable for the appliance?
Please note – When
carrying out Visual Inspections, EURO PAT automatically undertake
minor repairs as necessary i.e. changing or rewiring plug,
replacing fuses etc as part of the service.
